Our History
On February 23, 1973 James A. Lewis Insurance Agency, Inc., officially opened for business as a full-service Property, Casualty, Life & Disability agency. The business opened the doors with only two full-time employees. As Stafford County’s only independent insurance agency, our personal service and the slogan “large enough to serve, small enough to care: became well known throughout the region.
The agency changed its corporate make-up in 1980 with the addition of Mrs. Lewis as an equal stockholder and corporate treasurer. James A. Lewis Insurance Agency, Inc. became Lewis Insurance Associates (LIA) for trading purposes, while the Corporation name remained untouched. The Lewis’ decided it was time to retire in 2003. After meeting with a long-time personal friend and professional insurance agent, the Lewis’ knew their agency would move forward as they always envisioned. On April 12, 2004 the agency was purchased by current President, John W. Atkins, III, CIC.
Since 2004, the agency has almost doubled employee size to 9 staff members, 8 of which are licensed insurance agents. The office changed location within Stafford County by moving 3 miles south along Jefferson Davis Highway in 2008. The new office provides our agents with private office space and more room to meet with clients. We welcome you to visit with us to discuss how we can help with your insurance.
